Integrative medicine brings together the best of modern, evidence-based medicine with a deep respect for the body’s innate healing capacity and the full context of a person’s life — mind, body, spirit, and community. It asks not only What is happening? but, Why might this be happening now? and, What would healing look like for this individual?
I believe in integrative medicine —
not as a specialty, but as an approach to care.
At its core, integrative medicine is relationship-centered. It emphasizes collaboration between physician and patient, shared decision-making, and care plans that are realistic, values-driven, and sustainable over time. It prioritizes the least invasive, least toxic, and most appropriate interventions without rejecting conventional medicine when it is needed.
Integrative medicine also embraces interdisciplinary care and a broader therapeutic toolkit. It draws thoughtfully from both Western medicine and longstanding global healing traditions — including systems such as traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and Indigenous healing practices, as well as modalities like acupuncture, herbal and plant-based medicine, and manual therapies — while applying modern clinical judgment and evidence to guide their use.
"what gives your life meaning?"
This expanded lens allows care to be tailored to the individual rather than forced into a single pathway. In practice, it allows us to address health challenges from multiple complementary angles and reduces reliance on any one intervention.
This approach recognizes that many of the most powerful drivers of health live outside of prescriptions and procedures: sleep, movement, nutrition, stress management, purpose, connection, and environment. It also acknowledges that information alone does not equal wisdom and that true understanding comes from helping patients interpret information within the context of their own lives.
Integrative medicine makes space for questions that are often left unasked in traditional settings:
What do you hope for?
What gives your life meaning?
What are you trying to preserve with age?
Rather than fragmenting care into ever-narrower specialties, integrative medicine works to connect the dots: coordinating across disciplines, engaging interdisciplinary teams when helpful, and supporting patients as active participants in their own health.
I believe this approach represents the future of primary care and an evolving rubric for whole-person care across the health system, regardless of specialty.
A model that promotes health across the lifespan, treats disease when present, and helps people live fully, not just longer.
